Our school badge is derived from the family crest of Baron Pieter van Reede van Oudtshoorn, an aristocrat of the latter half of the 18th century and appointed governor to the Cape. Unfortunately, he died before taking up office.

The three horns are not gunpowder caskets as is generally surmised, but hunting horns. In earlier times hunting horns were used to assemble people for important announcements, e.g. the arrival of the mail coach. The hunting horn was thus a valuable harbinger of messages. The important message in our case is the motto of Oudtshoorn High School:

PER LABOREM AD ASTRA
Honest hard labour leads to great heights / success.

Our school badge is, therefore, between four and five centuries old. It is a cherished heritage and, quite possibly, in its original form, the oldest used by any school in the Republic of South Africa.
